Nine-Year-Old Amputee Meets Princess of Wales at Windsor Castle After Completing Three Peaks Challenge

A nine-year-old boy from Flintshire who conquered the Three Peaks Challenge alongside his father has been invited to Windsor Castle, where he met Catherine, the Princess of Wales, to celebrate his remarkable achievement. Albie-Junior Thomas, who lives in Holywell, was among a group of people welcomed for a tea party in recognition of their completion of the gruelling mountaineering feat.

The invitation came after Albie-Junior's father, Daniel Thomas, wrote a letter to the princess describing how his son had scaled the highest mountains in Wales, Scotland and England. Daniel believed the message would strike a chord with Catherine, who had herself completed the Three Peaks Challenge earlier in the year to raise funds for the hospital where she received treatment for cancer.

Albie-Junior was born without a fibula in his left leg and underwent an amputation of his foot at just 15 months old. Despite this significant early challenge, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of what many might expect. By the age of four, he had already become the youngest amputee to reach the summit of Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, which is Wales' highest peak. That achievement alone would be notable for any child, but it proved to be only the beginning of a series of ambitious climbing endeavours.

In August, Albie-Junior completed the full Three Peaks Challenge in 22 hours and 30 minutes, tackling Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Yr Wyddfa in Wales. His father was by his side throughout the expedition, and the pair powered through the demanding schedule with the help of ham and cheese sandwiches and sour sweets, following four months of dedicated training.

Daniel Thomas described the phone call inviting them to Windsor Castle as "unbelievable." When they arrived, he intentionally stayed in the background, allowing his son to savour the moment. "It was his thing," he explained. He recounted how Albie-Junior treated the encounter as a simple conversation, describing it as "just like a chat to a lady" and noting "the innocence of it." He added that watching the interaction felt "like a mother talking to a son."

The father said the conversation stood out because of how pleasant it was, and he observed that Catherine made his son feel as though they were "both equals." The princess later shared a message on X, describing it as a "pleasure" to hear the stories of "resilience, determination and hope" shared by each person she met at the gathering. In a further reflection, she wrote that listening to their experiences and their reasons for taking on the challenge was a powerful reminder that "recovery is rarely a journey we make alone," and she emphasised the importance of the people who walk alongside us along the way.

For Albie-Junior, the meeting with the princess is the latest milestone in a young life already defined by extraordinary resilience. His father noted that despite the millions of views their social media channels have attracted, his son remains remarkably grounded. "To him, he's just doing what boys should do. Getting out and having fun," Daniel said. "It's not like it's for the fame or nothing like that." He added that he often reminds his son that all he has really done is "walk up a few mountains."

The Three Peaks Challenge is considered one of the most demanding endurance events in the United Kingdom, requiring participants to summit the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales within a 24-hour period. The challenge involves approximately 23 miles of walking and around 10,000 feet of ascent, not to mention the long drives between the mountains. Completing it is a significant achievement for any adult, let alone a nine-year-old amputee. Albie-Junior's success in finishing within 22 hours and 30 minutes places him well inside the standard time limit.

The bond between Albie-Junior and his father has been central to these accomplishments. The pair have previously embarked on several climbing challenges together, raising thousands of pounds for their local football club in the process. Their partnership demonstrates how shared goals can help children facing physical challenges to develop confidence, resilience and a sense of purpose.

The family is now setting their sights on an even more ambitious target. Daniel Thomas revealed that they are planning to tackle Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and they are gathering a team of ten others to climb it with them in August next year. He acknowledged the complexity of such an undertaking, noting: "When there's a challenge set you want to get it done, but it's not just about that because you have to acclimatise and get the safety right."

Daniel also said he intends to contact Guinness World Records, as his son could potentially become the youngest amputee to climb Kilimanjaro. "Yeah, I'm determined to get him in it," he added. If successful, the feat would add another remarkable entry to a growing list of achievements that already includes being the youngest amputee to summit Yr Wyddfa and completing the Three Peaks Challenge.

Albie-Junior's story is a testament to the power of determination and family support. From learning to walk with a prosthetic limb to standing atop the highest peaks in Britain, he has defied expectations at every stage. His father's philosophy is simple: "As long as you're nice with someone else and they're nice back, you know that's the way it should be." That outlook appears to have shaped a young boy who, despite international attention, remains focused on the joy of adventure rather than the trappings of fame.
