NATO Jets Scramble in Poland Amid Wave of Russian Jet-Powered Drone Strikes Across Ukraine

NATO allied military aircraft were mobilized over Poland during the overnight hours after Russian forces unleashed a barrage of advanced jet-powered strike drones against targets across Ukraine, including areas near the alliance's eastern border. The deployment underscores growing vigilance along NATO’s flank as aerial bombardments edge closer to member states' airspace.

Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed the overnight aerial activity in official statements released on the social media platform X. The command stated that it instituted a short-term elevation of readiness for designated military assets in response to the intense barrage launched by Russian forces into neighboring western Ukrainian territory.

According to Polish defense officials, the operational maneuvers were carried out as a precautionary measure. The primary objective of scrambling the fighter aircraft was to guarantee the comprehensive safety and sovereignty of Polish airspace, with particular operational focus given to border regions directly adjacent to the Ukrainian territories struck during the assault.

In a follow-up statement, the Polish command noted that military aviation assets maintained active patrols while ground-based air defense batteries and radar reconnaissance systems were maintained at an appropriate state of alert. These defensive procedures were kept in place to address the potential emergence of further security threats to Polish skies before operations officially stood down after approximately two hours.

The scramble was prompted by a multi-pronged overnight drone assault documented by the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukrainian defense officials reported that Russian forces launched a total of 149 unmanned aerial vehicles into the country. The strike package featured a sophisticated combination of conventional Shahed strike drones, with approximately half of the fleet consisting of newer jet-powered variants, deployed alongside Gerbera and Parody decoy craft designed to overwhelm radar systems.

Ukrainian air defense units managed to intercept and shoot down 128 of the 149 incoming drones. Despite the high interception rate, several drones penetrated defenses, with impacts and falling debris confirmed across at least 13 separate locations throughout the country.

The overnight bombardment resulted in significant civilian casualties and infrastructural damage in several Ukrainian population centers. In the northeastern city of Sumy, local authorities and emergency teams reported that a Russian drone strike slammed into a shopping mall, killing at least two people and injuring 23 others as rescue teams sifted through the debris.

Further destruction was reported in the capital city of Kyiv, where Ukraine's State Emergency Service documented strikes damaging a residential structure. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed via Telegram that at least three individuals sustained injuries after a drone impacted a commercial gas station situated within the capital's Holosiivskyi district. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, emergency services reported that at least eight people were injured in related strikes.

The Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged its offensive operations, stating that its overnight targets included the southern Ukrainian hub of Mykolaiv as well as the southwestern port municipality of Chornomorsk. Russian defense officials further claimed that their forces targeted two commercial dry cargo vessels that were navigating toward the Black Sea port city of Odesa.

Simultaneously, Moscow claimed that it was subjected to an extensive Ukrainian counter-drone barrage. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its domestic air defense systems intercepted and destroyed at least 448 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles overnight. Russian officials asserted that these interceptions took place across 13 domestic administrative regions, as well as over occupied Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea.

The widespread aerial activity caused severe disruption to civilian air travel across the Russian Federation. Russia's federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsiya, implemented temporary emergency flight restrictions beginning Wednesday evening and extending into Thursday morning at numerous regional transit hubs, including airports in Sochi, Krasnodar, Volgograd, Tambov, Penza, and Saratov.

Similar air traffic suspensions were enforced across southern and North Caucasus airports, including facilities in Grozny, Vladikavkaz, and Makhachkala. In addition, Rosaviatsiya placed temporary operational limits on two of the capital's busiest air terminals, Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports in the Moscow region.

Addressing the reciprocal actions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a statement on Telegram that Kyiv's forces had executed precision strikes against eight Russian infrastructure facilities that directly support Moscow's military logistics over the preceding 24-hour cycle.

Zelenskyy detailed that the Ukrainian military operations struck an industrial oil refinery located in the northern Yamalo-Nenets region and a maritime commercial trading port situated in the Republic of Dagestan. Additional infrastructure targets were struck within Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan, and Bryansk, with the Ukrainian leader declaring that daily Russian terror against his country continues to be met with a just and calculated response.
