Jackson Police Investigate Hanging Death of Black Woman as Community and Family Demand Federal Scrutiny

More than a month after a 29-year-old Black woman was found hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, her family and local residents are urgently demanding transparency from authorities. The prolonged silence surrounding the case has intensified public distress in a state still wrestling with its painful history of racial terror.

The victim, Tasia Fortune, was discovered dead on August 3 in the yard of an abandoned property. With the official cause of death still unconfirmed by forensic authorities, the majority-Black city has remained on edge, prompting thousands of citizens and elected officials to call for external oversight and federal intervention into the investigation.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed mounting frustration over what she described as an excruciating lack of communication from local law enforcement. For weeks, family members made repeated inquiries to the Jackson Police Department to obtain status updates on the case, only to be met with complete silence.

Spivey last saw her daughter alive on July 26, when Fortune traveled from Mississippi—where she had resided for roughly a decade—to Kentucky to attend a family reunion. During that final visit, Fortune had spoken openly about the prospect of relocating back home to be closer to her family.

The emotional aftermath has taken a heavy toll on the grieving relatives. Recalling the moment she arrived at the funeral home prior to the burial, Spivey stated that the heartbreak was so intense she could barely bring herself to look directly at her daughter's body, managing only to look from the side while Fortune's father stepped forward.

Following weeks of public concern, Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney addressed the matter during a municipal meeting, confirming for the first time publicly that investigators have approached the case as a potential homicide since the day Fortune was discovered.

Chief Brackney subsequently clarified that the department treats pending death inquiries at the highest possible classification to ensure that crucial forensic evidence is preserved while awaiting official autopsy findings. However, before that public statement, municipal authorities had publicly described the matter merely as a standard death investigation.

The state medical examiner’s office has declined to provide comment on the active investigation. An official determination regarding the precise cause and manner of Fortune’s death remains pending until the completion of the full autopsy and toxicology reports.

The circumstances surrounding Fortune's death have fueled widespread apprehension across the community, where many fear that racial violence could be resurfacing. In the absence of prompt updates and verified facts, suspicion and anxiety have grown across the region.

Fortune’s case represents the third incident in Mississippi within a single year involving an individual found dead and hanging from a tree. In September 2025, the bodies of two men—one Black and one white—were found hanging on the exact same day in separate occurrences.

Both of the September 2025 deaths were officially classified as suicides by authorities. However, the ruling in at least one of those cases remains fiercely disputed by the mother of the deceased, Trey Reed, who has challenged the state's official findings.

The mounting unease has catalyzed widespread community activism, leading to an online petition that has amassed over 50,000 signatures. The petition calls for an independent review into the state's chief medical examiner, Dr. Staci Turner, citing concerns over how recent death cases involving people of color have been managed.

A separate petition has demanded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation launch an immediate, independent probe into Fortune's death to guarantee a thorough and impartial inquiry.

Local leaders have also voiced deep frustration with the pace and visible conduct of the municipal investigation. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes stated that he personally visited the area outside Fortune’s suspected residence on multiple occasions and observed no active police presence.

Stokes emphasized that any hanging in Mississippi carries profound historical weight and should immediately be elevated to the highest investigative priority. He confirmed that he sent formal letters to both the local FBI field office and federal prosecutors at the Mississippi U.S. Attorney’s office requesting urgent assistance, but noted that he has yet to receive any response.

National lawmakers have also joined the call for federal action. U.S. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett formally submitted a request to the U.S. Department of Justice, urging federal authorities to intervene and conduct a rigorous investigation to ensure accountability and deliver answers to Fortune's family.
