Helen Jenner Poised to Take Reins as Reform UK Welsh Leader Following Dan Thomas Resignation

Helen Jenner is widely expected to take over as the leader of Reform UK in Wales, following indications from senior party insiders that she has secured significant internal support. The Senedd member has emerged as the clear favourite to assume the permanent leadership position, with high-ranking figures across the organization backing her candidacy to head the political group in Cardiff Bay.

The impending leadership change comes after the sudden resignation of former Welsh leader Dan Thomas, who stepped down from his post amid an active police investigation. Jenner, who currently serves as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Bangor Conwy Môn, was Thomas's deputy and immediately stepped up into the role of interim Welsh leader following his departure.

Thomas vacated the leadership after he was arrested and subsequently released on bail over the weekend on suspicion of assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Despite the severity of the allegations being investigated by police, Thomas has strongly maintained his innocence and publicly stated that he has done nothing wrong throughout the matter.

While Thomas has relinquished his leadership duties at the helm of the Welsh party, he has not been suspended from Reform UK. As a result, he remains in the Senedd and continues to represent the constituency of Casnewydd Islwyn as a sitting MS. Thomas had initially been chosen and appointed to lead Reform in Wales by the party's UK leader, Nigel Farage, back in February.

In the wake of Thomas's exit, Reform's internal hierarchy has rapidly moved to establish steady leadership in the Welsh Parliament. Sources familiar with the internal party discussions told BBC Wales that Jenner enjoys the support of "very senior" figures within the party, positioning her as the undisputed frontrunner for the role.

Although Jenner has not yet made a formal public declaration regarding her campaign or intentions, the leadership pathway appears largely uncontested due to several key colleagues deciding against putting their names forward for the position.

Among those who had weighed a bid was James Evans, the party's health spokesperson in the Senedd. Evans claimed on Wednesday that he had secured majority backing from within the parliamentary group to mount a leadership challenge, but he ultimately ruled himself out of the contest after discussing the situation with his family.

In addition to Evans stepping aside, Reform UK's chief whip, Llŷr Powell, officially confirmed to BBC Wales that he has completely ruled himself out of standing for the leadership. These withdrawals have significantly narrowed the field, leaving Jenner with a clear run at the party's top post in Wales.

Under the party's established leadership procedures, if more than one candidate enters the race, the contest will be decided by a secret ballot among Reform MSs. However, party rules specify that the wider membership will have no vote in the contest, ensuring that any final decision remains strictly confined to the group's elected parliamentarians.

Jenner brings a distinctive background to the leadership role. Prior to pursuing a career in politics, she worked professionally as an English teacher. She was born in the south Wales town of Neath and later grew up on the island of Anglesey, and she is also a fluent Welsh speaker.

Her political history is closely linked to Nigel Farage's various campaigns over the years. Before joining Reform UK, Jenner was a member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) when it was under Farage's leadership, and she subsequently ran as a candidate for the Brexit Party during the 2019 UK general election.

Jenner has previously spoken about how watching Farage helped spark her personal engagement in politics. During an appearance on a BBC Walescast podcast episode over the summer, she described the profound effect of seeing Farage deliver animated speeches in the European Parliament, explaining that his passionate clips on YouTube made her feel he was a principled figure and led her to realize that she genuinely cared about politics.

In that same podcast appearance, Jenner also addressed the criticism and cultural opposition she has faced from detractors in Wales due to her political allegiance. As a Welsh speaker, she revealed that critics online had told her she had no right to attend the National Eisteddfod, one of the nation's foremost cultural celebrations, simply because of her membership in Reform UK.

Jenner's impending accession marks an important moment for Reform UK in Wales as the group seeks to regain stability following a tumultuous period. If confirmed as leader, she will be tasked with directing the party's strategy in the Senedd, managing relations within the caucus, and navigating the political fallout resulting from the allegations surrounding her predecessor.
