The second series of The Celebrity Traitors opened with a spectacle befitting its gothic castle setting, as host Claudia Winkleman made her entrance in a closed coffin carried aloft by druids. The elaborate arrival unfolded inside a church, where 21 nervous celebrities had gathered to begin their attempt to survive the game of deception. Winkleman emerged from the coffin with a deadpan remark about having enjoyed "quite the nap."

Her entrance immediately drew comparison to Cleopatra, with model and actress Jerry Hall gasping the nickname "Claudiapatra" in recognition of the shared grandeur and hairstyle. The host later revealed at the show's press launch that she had been delighted with what she called her "iconic entrance," though she admitted she had first considered hiding inside a suit of armour in the castle. She described the alternative ideas as something out of a GCSE history fantasy, noting that a grandfather clock had also been under consideration.

While the coffin set the tone for a theatrical premiere, the episode's dominant talking point quickly became actor Richard E Grant, whose conduct threatened to upend the game within minutes. Grant and presenter Maya Jama were selected as two of Winkleman's three traitors, placing them in the role responsible for covertly eliminating the faithful contestants. No sooner had the selection been made than Grant appeared to forget the fundamental premise of the game, cheerfully announcing to those around him that he was, in fact, a traitor.

The admission landed in a room of stunned silence. Singer James Blunt laughed it off as "an interesting angle," while comic Rob Beckett suggested Grant had accomplished something that had never previously occurred in the format, calling it a bold strategy. Grant later acknowledged the scale of his error in footage shown to viewers, confessing that it may have been the biggest mistake of his life. He explained that he had been so thrilled at being chosen as a traitor that, in his unguarded excitement, he simply blurted out the truth. He added that he clearly needed to defuse the heat now heading in his direction.

The fallout continued the following day, when former BBC journalist Amol Rajan swooped in to interrogate Grant about the previous night's events. Rather than sowing clever seeds of doubt among his fellow contestants, Grant offered an odd response, saying he had been so blatant about wanting to be a traitor that he simply confirmed it when asked. Rajan branded him the "Lord of Chaos," a label that seemed to capture the unpredictable energy he had brought to the castle.

Not everyone turned against him, however. Jerry Hall declared her loyalty, insisting she did not believe Richard was a traitor and citing a friendship spanning 30 years and their status as neighbours. She acknowledged that he says and does eccentric things and described him as an amazing person, but suggested he was acting out because he had not been chosen for the role. Her steadfastness may yet be tested, given that in series one, comedian Alan Carr eliminated Paloma Faith by touching her face, a precedent that has made physical contact in the castle deeply suspicious.

Comic and writer Miranda Hart also leaned toward believing Grant could be a faithful contestant, though she conceded she was confused by his behaviour. Winkleman told the press launch she believed Grant had revealed his identity by accident precisely because he was so exhilarated by the role. She described him as giddy and said he was simply laughing at everything unfolding around him, calling the whole thing fantastic.

Ed Gamble, host of the BBC One and BBC Sounds spin-off show Uncloaked, offered his own assessment of the moment. He compared it to someone being handed the lead role in a film and feeling compelled to tell everyone about it, describing it as an insane moment in the show's history. The remark underscored how rare it is for a traitor to expose themselves voluntarily, let alone with such enthusiasm.

Grant eventually appeared to recognise the need for a change in approach. The source notes that he decided to let the far more cool, calm and collected Jama take the lead in their subsequent decision-making, a sensible retreat for a contestant who had already burned through much of his credibility.

Beyond the chaos surrounding Grant, other celebrities demonstrated genuine value during the episode's challenges. Ross Kemp, the former EastEnders actor turned documentary-maker known for programmes about gangs and the armed forces, admitted to feeling nervous in the church pews. He nonetheless came into his own during the task, taking joint charge alongside former army captain James Blunt. The pair divided the celebrities into teams, leading them to successfully locate treasure aboard a pirate ship and securing £15,000 for the group's efforts.

Kemp's confidence evaporated once he returned to the castle, where paranoia took hold. Bella Ramsey, star of The Last of Us and Game of Thrones and a key participant in the task, had grabbed a captain's hat from the boat and playfully placed it on Kemp's head to mark their victory. Later, Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock touched him on the arm as she passed through the bar. Recalling how Carr had eliminated Faith early in the previous series, Kemp grew visibly fearful that he had been killed by a traitor.

That reaction delighted Gamble, who called it one of the funniest things he had ever seen. He noted that Kemp had already interpreted Ramsey placing the captain's hat on him as a murder in plain sight, only to become terrified moments later when a member of Little Mix touched his arm. Gamble marvelled at what he described as the variety of men living within the Ross Kemp sphere, contrasting the hard man who ran the mission with the man unnerved by a passing pop star.

The episode also introduced viewers to other contestants, including actress Myha'la, who appeared in a smart grey and black suit and expressed her own ambitions within the game. Her presence added to a cast assembled from across entertainment, sport and journalism, all competing for a prize while attempting to identify the traitors hidden among them.

As the series continues, the central question will be whether Grant's early blunder proves fatal to his game or somehow becomes a masterstroke of misdirection. Hall's loyalty, the other contestants' growing suspicions, and the precedent set by Carr's face-touching elimination in series one all point to a tense road ahead. For now, the premiere delivered exactly what its title promised: chaos, coffins and a nickname that may stick to Winkleman for the rest of the season.
