Wainwright Yu, a seasoned executive in the tech industry, reflects on his career trajectory at a prominent company known as the "Magnificent 7." His narrative is one of unexpected twists and turns, filled with setbacks and missed opportunities, yet ultimately leading to significant growth and success.
Yu's journey began with a summer internship that didn't pan out as expected. Despite being rejected for the internship, he was later offered a full-time position at the same company. This initial experience set the tone for his career, marked by a series of near-misses and unexpected assignments that would shape his path.
One such twist came when Yu was promoted to principal product manager, a role that initially seemed far from his aspirations. However, it was this role that ultimately led to his promotion to director, a position he never envisioned himself in. "The job that looks beneath you on paper is often the one that makes you, if you let it," Yu reflects.
Throughout his career, Yu faced several instances where he was passed over for opportunities he coveted. Despite these setbacks, he remained committed to the company, learning valuable lessons along the way. "There are moments when everyone around you seems to be headed for the exit. Those are often the moments worth staying for," he says.
One particularly memorable detour was his move to a startup team within the company. Initially, the project seemed doomed to fail, but it eventually scaled significantly, expanding the product line and growing customer adoption. This experience taught Yu the importance of not being fixated on initial perceptions and the potential for change over time.
Yu's journey also highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability. "Every failure hurt, but what ultimately helped me get up after every fall wasn't a fancier title, a more glamorous product, or a larger team. It was having the opportunity to make things that people use and love," he explains.
One of the key lessons Yu learned was the need to let go of the perfect career path he had envisioned in his mind. "The door into the company via a summer internship closed, the door into a real product role through post-MBA placement closed, the door to scaled impact through a startup product closed, but the goal remained the same: build things that matter," he says.
Today, as a director leading larger businesses with larger teams, Yu's perspective on his career has evolved. "How did it feel getting here? About the same as always: like falling forward — painful stumbles and detours, yet still progress," he concludes.
Yu's story serves as an inspiration to aspiring professionals in the tech industry, reminding them that success often comes from embracing the unexpected and learning from setbacks. It's a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of staying true to one's goals, even when the path is not as initially planned.
